Good article on the Remington 870 pump action Shotgun. I have 2 870's, 12 guages, one was my Dads. Mine is an 870 Police Model with a few extras, Speedfeed stock holds 4 rounds of slugs, Mesa side saddle holds 6 rounds if 00 buck, oversized speed safety, sling mount, extended tube to hold 6 rounds, flashlight mount.

You just can't beat a 870 for reliability! I've had this one for forty years and it was abused by the Sheriff's Department prior to that for ten years!

Reb 🙂

I just added the 10 round extension on mine and added a rifled choke tube.
Awesome, what length barrel do have to go with that long magazine tube extension?

My first love when it comes to guns is American made pump shotguns. My favorite is the 870. I have 4 wingmasters, a special field, a police and an express all 12 gauge. Sad to see the big R filing for bankruptcy. (again)
Awesome collection of 870's!!! Hopefully Big Green will survive this bankruptcy they make the best rifles and shotguns!

I have a 12 Gauge 2 3/4" to 3" Wingmaster with the 28" barrel. I wish I had bought the magnum action. It's funny, the extension tube is only 2" shorter and with that big trigger guard it almost looks like a huge lever-action rifle, lol.
Cool. When fully loaded, does it slow you down moving from target to target?

I never thought about going longer than I did, other than maybe a 4 shot extension that would be 8 rounds plus 1 in the chamber.

26" Remington barrel is flush with choate +5 extension. I have one on an 1100. Does choate still make Remington extensions??

Does your receiver say wingmaster magnum on it?
No, just Remington 870 and the barrel is stamped 3 1/2" with super-mag receiver only. I guess I was wrong, I bought it so many years ago. Mine must be the Express model. Remington does have a Super-Mag model 870 that shoots the 3 1/2" rounds.

Reb, I've never had any problem swinging the 28" barrel but I know I've slowed down a lot the last few years and I don't practice near enough. I haven't had it out with the mag extension so I can't tell you how I like it yet, lol.

So, with the new extension, the magazine ends up at 26 ". With the spring and follower, it fits 9 rounds of 2 3/4" making it 10 with one in the chamber. I guess technically that makes it a 5 round extension. The package says 10, is that false advertising?

I currently am running a Scatterguns 2 shot extension on my 870 a police model, 6 in the tube, plus 4 in the Speedfeed stock and 6 in the side saddle, so thats 16 rounds. Out of that load 10 are 00 buck, 6 1oz slugs.

My other 870 is set up with a side saddle which holds 6 rounds, and has a 2 shot extension for 6 rounds in the tube. Other than those items its stock for now.

This prompted me to look that the .410. It's a Sportsman's Field with a 25" barrel, chambered for 2 1/2" and 3" and has a full choke. It doesn't have removable chokes like the 12 Gauge does but since .410 is really only good for small game or training youth to shoot anyway, not a big loss.

Has anybody ever used short loads in the 12 gauge? I'm talking about those 2'' rounds, would my 870 have any problems chambering those even though it is set for 2 3/4 and 3" rounds? I've never used them and never asked if it was safe to fire them.
