New 9 mm HP mold

Placed my order for a new 9 mm HP mold from NOE this morning, hope to have it by the coming weekend. As a FN pins installed it will cast a 135 gr. bullet, about 132 grs. with the cup point pins and around 130 grs. with the HP pins estimated. I was going to purchase some jacketed HP bullets but the supplier was backlogged eight weeks and I like casting my own handgun HP bullets and I can cast FN or cup points as well and the mold was actually cheaper with shipping.

This will be my third HP mold, I have the NOE clone of the Lyman / Ideal Ray Thompson # 358156 double crimp groove gas check HP / FN mold for 38 / 357 Mag. The NOE .452" 220 gr. HP mold which will also cast FN or cup point bullets and finally one in 9 mm. Look forward to casting, coating and doing some expansion test.

I cast up a few hundred of the new 9 mm HP bullets this morning before the heat set in and I had to quit for the day. My shed doesn't have AC and with the heat index up over 100 it's no fun setting over a hot pot. Took about fifteen throws to get the mold and pins heated up to what it liked but it threw great bullet from then on, I ended up casting two full pots of lead before I quit.

If it cools off tonight I plan on doing some powder coating and sizing, I'm anxious to get some loaded up and do some testing for accuracy and expansion. I weighed a random handful of the bullets and the lightest was 129.8 and the heaviest was 130.2 bullet dia. was a consistent .358".

Those bullets look great, weight is fairly near each other! They came out at .358" that makes them good also for 38/357! Awesome!!! Well done!!!

I thinks me needs that Noe Mould also after I see your test results.🙂

I need to make a slight adjustment on one of the pins, it's setting just a little deep into the cavity and forming a shallow inner ring but thats an easy thing to fix with a little downward pressure with a crescent wrench. It's the reason also I'm getting a couple tenths variation in bullet weights.

Are you using Lyman#2 alloy?

I cast all my pistol and rifle bullet from 50/50 pure lead and COWW, all bullets get powder coated. The choice of whether I air cool or water quench after powder coating or if I apply a gas check if the bullet is designed for one really depends on what I'm going to do with the bullet.

For this particular bullet in HP form I will just air cool them after powder coating and size to .357" final BHN will be around 9 or 10 with the alloy mix. I'll probably load some test batches with a couple different powers but velocity will be running somewhere in the 1100 fps. range.

Here in CA they done away with lead wheel weights, they show up from time to time but its mostly zinc alloy wheel weights. I'm down to around 6 or 7 lbs of wheel weights now that I still need to clean up and melt them down. only way to get it now is to order it from a private party out of state.

Every tire shop I've been to recycle their scrap wheel weights now. California's way of getting rid of lead, also trying to ban all lead ammo in the state.

I got them all powder coated today in several colors, has a little over 250. The last batch is in the toaster oven now being cured. Used some Metal Gray, Carolina Blue, Clear and Transparent Copper.
