PRIMER TYPES

Why are primers made unidentifiable outside of the packaging?
You cannot tell the difference between a rifle and pistol primer. Why can't they be detectable some how, so mistakes are not made.
I was reading somewhere that these 2 especially were being mixed up and they should not be interchanged.
Thanks in advance to all you primer experts chiming in.

The best way to not mix up primers is to follow the same rule handloaders should use when handling powder, only have one powder type out on the work area at any time, when finished put any unused primer back in there original packaging or mark the primer tube if you're using one. Large Rifle & Large Pistol as well as Small Rifle & Small Pistol share similar characteristics, Large Rifle & Pistol are the same diameter but Large Rifle primer have thicker cups and are slight taller than Large Pistol, the principle is the same for Small Rifle & Pistol.

There are some difference between primers in the same groups of primers but there are many that look just alike so it's important to keep them separated as there are a multitude of issues that can arise form using the wrong primer.

Well said. One of the most important lessons on reloading safety.

the only real difference between primers i can find is between large rifle and large pistol. Large rifle primer dimensions are .2105 - .2130 diameter and .123 - .136 height and large pistol .210 - .212 diameter and .115 - .126 height per saami specs so the large rifle are taller than large pistol. the small rifle and small pistol are the same height

Yes, rifle primers are a bit larger than pistol.
